Wisdom Teeth- the pain without gain

Why is this painfully useless tooth called wisdom tooth? Is it because it grows when we become adult? or is it the sign that we have become wise? Then how painful it is to become wise! The pain is unbearable, and I have been drinking for the last three days to escape it, and starting this morning I am forced to fast. The swelling in my gums won't let me chew anything at all. Everybody says I should remove it surgically- I have just become wise and removing it would mean I am denying the change.
I have to do a little research before I let it go, for what is pain without gain?

  1. It might cause serious infection if you leave it. Wisdom teeth are weird and unpredictable, though. My father and I both needed all four surgically removed, he when he was in his 50s, me when I was 21. My mother and brother didn't have them at all.

  2. I think I will have to remove them as well, damn I can't fast for so long. I am surviving on soup. Thanks Andrea for letting me know it's ok to remove...

  3. It will hurt and your face will swell up when they are removed, but it will be in kind of a controlled way, I guess. If you just wait for infection, it will be beyond your control!

  4. I agree. Wisdom teeth are unpredictable by nature. My dentist told me that it may or may not grown and it can even grow as impacted.

  5. In my case, all of my children have wisdom teeth. I'd probably have them extracted when they reach 13.

  6. "Wisdom teeth" are a type of molar. Molars are the chewing teeth found furthest in the back of the mouth.
Most humans have 1st, 2nd and 3rd molars. A person's third molars are their wisdom teeth.

  7. They are generally thought to be called "wisdom teeth" because they appear so late—much later than the other teeth, at an age where people are supposedly wiser than as a child, when the other teeth erupt. Alternatively it may be that the term derives from a mistranslation of the corresponding term in Dutch in which language they are called 'verstandskiezen', literally 'far-standing-molars' referring to the fact that they are located at the back of the mouth. In Dutch such compound words are contracted (written without the spaces) leaving the first part of the word as 'verstand' which can correctly be translated as 'wisdom' in English. It is interesting to note that, although the origin of the word is well known, among Dutch speaking layman it has become common to derive the word from verstand (as wisdom), similar to the common English derivation, apparently under infuence from the English language and in modern Belgian (Dutch and French) they are sometimes called wijsheidstand (dents de sagesse) which seems to be a literal translation of the English term.

  8. Thanks for that Ganawil, I was just about to say that. Without looking at its origin, it's quite obvious - wisdom comes with age, and with age comes wisdom teeth. Makes sense?

  9. I think it was due to the fact that when you get so high from the anesthesia when you remove it you gain some sort of wisdom.

  10. You can have it removed. Most people have their removed because even if it doesn't cause pain while it's newly grown, it can give way to a painful inflammation after a few years, I've heard of such cases.

  17. Wisdom teeth are the items that can make you become wise. They are called that because they usually come in when you are older, about 17 to 21 years old. These teeth are behind your mouth. Usually you will get two on top and two on the bottom as part of a complete set of 32 adult teeth.

These molars are easier to trouble you than any other teeth. Every year, approximately 10 million wisdom teeth are removed, or extracted in the United States. The main reason is that when the teeth do not have enough space to come out of the gums, it will have an effect.

You should be able to resume normal activities the next day after take out the wisdom tooth. But in order to speed healing and relieve any pain, you can do according to the followings:

    Place a cold pack on your chin to help treat pain and swelling;
Try not to spit too much, so you won't move blood clots that block bleeding in the area.
Drink more water, but stay away from alcohol, hot drinks or soda for 24 hours.
You may not be able to open your mouth completely for about a week. Insist on soft food, avoiding to bother the affected area.
